Let’s batch cook! It’s been a while! Life is busy as a full-time mom, and lately I’ve been thinking about how to consolidate the day to day tasks (like cooking) in order to have a little extra me time at the end of the day to maintain my sanity. I don’t think I’ve found the … [Read more…]

Green Juice Smoothie

Wouldn’t it be so nice to start each day with a cold-pressed green juice?! Unfortunately buying one every day is not in my $ budget right now and getting my own juicer and cleaning it out every day is just not in my time budget right now. Ah.. maybe one day I’ll have peaceful mornings … [Read more…]

Easy Grain Free Granola

May 20, 2020 by Diane 2 Comments
grain free granola

This might be my new favourite granola recipe! It’s super crunchy and clustery-exactly how I like my granola! I stuck to the basic deliciousness of pure maple syrup and cinnamon-a combo that really can’t go wrong-for a lightly sweetened, nicely spiced way to start the day. I love this grain free version because it’s a … [Read more…]

No-Bake Brownies

No bake 4-Ingredient Brownies

I’ve had a great time testing and perfecting this no-bake brownie recipe. I mean, I pretty much need a chocolate fix on the daily and this is it! Totally feels like a decadent treat but really it’s just an awesome source of some pretty important nutrients. Cacao is an amazing source of antioxidants, iron, magnesium, … [Read more…]

Salad with roasted sweet potato and beets with tahini dressing

This here was (is?) my go-to postpartum lunch. I seriously ate this every day for about 3 months, maybe 6, and I’m currently eating it while writing this as my 1 year-old naps. Which is why I figured I should share it with any mama friends out there, and for those of you who just … [Read more…]

This soup. I’ve had this so many times lately and I’m just not getting sick of it. I’m thinking it’s about time I share it, no?! This butternut squash soup is my take on my Nonna’s “Milk Soup.” I know, it sounds odd, but we begged for this stuff as kids. And I never really … [Read more…]

A whole week of celebrating my sweet little guy. L A whole week of celebrating my sweet little guy. Love you my little Jamesie James!
It’s always an adventure with these two 💙💙 It’s always an adventure with these two 💙💙

There are 3 things I strive to really avoid feedin There are 3 things I strive to really avoid feeding my kids:

1. Artificial Sweeteners
2. Artificial flavours
3. Artificial Colours

If nothing else, lets keep the food real, shall we?

Starting with artificial sweeteners:
Research has linked artificial sweeteners to hyperactivity, mood swings, headaches, learning disorders and TANTRUMS in children. Do I need to go on? Sure thing.

Artificial sweeteners are linked to weight gain and obesity, and with the childhood obesity epidemic, we do not need to be adding fuel to the fire. They mess with hunger cues, glucose metabolism, and even disrupt the oh-so-important microbiome (aka, a healthy gut, which is key to immune health, nutrient absorption, digestion, and mental health!)

Several studies on animals link artificial sweeteners to cancer growth, liver and kidney disorders, and the malfunction of neurotransmitters. I for one, am not taking that chance with my kids!

Here are some common names for artificial sweeteners to look out for: Sucralose, aspartame, sweet n' low, saccharine, xylitol, sugar alcohol...and many more! Read those labels!

Common foods with artificial sweeteners:

Flavoured yogurts, especially if it's labelled "sugar free"
(If it tastes sweet, I assure you there's a nasty artificial sweetener in there)
"Sugar-free"m cookies, ice cream, etc. (if it seems to good to be true, it probably is!)
Chewing gum and diet pop (Probably not best for us moms either!)
Salad dressings
Flavoured waters
Dried fruit
Canned fruit/peaches
conventional toothpaste
Anything labeled "low sugar" "reduced sugar" "low calorie" "lite"

If I'm giving my kids a special treat, I give them things sweetened with maple syrup, honey, molasses, dates, bananas, apple sauce or other fruits. And if it's a genuine special occasional that deserves cake-we eat the real deal sugar, none of that zero calorie fake crap!

Check those labels! I wrote a full blog post on this. Click the link in my profile and search "artificial sweeteners" for more info!
